Portsmouth, NH has partnered with CAI Technologies on a crucial infrastructure mapping project to digitize and spatially map vital data from approximately 5,000 historical Water Service Tie Cards. This project will help Portsmouth meet Federal EPA Service Line Inventory requirements.
CAI staff will review the physical Tie Cards and use “Tie Line” measurements to map the location of each water shutoff valve. Following this, the complete service line will be digitized in the City’s GIS, creating segments from the public water main to the shutoff valve and from the shutoff valve to the building structure.
When available, critical attribute data, including pipe diameter and, most importantly, pipe material, will be integrated into the GIS. Accurately cataloging pipe material is essential for identifying lead service lines and ensuring compliance. By digitizing, mapping, and attributing this data, CAI is helping the City get one step closer to having a comprehensive, maintainable GIS layer vital for regulatory compliance, long-term asset management, operational efficiency, and public safety.
